Technology & Combat Characteristics
Developed based on the RGM-79F GM Land Combat Type, the RGM-79F Desert GM was part of the GM enhancement plan that was meant to create machines for operating in both desert and frigid regions. While the development of the RGM-79 GM had proven fairly successful in holding battle lines, the gap in pilot experience in skirmishes was clearly apparent, and the rapid training of pilots and adaptation to localized battles remained a top priority. To adapt to fighting in the desert, all the joints and intakes of the Desert GM received anti-dust treatment. The Desert GM also featured improved defense against projectiles, but rather than being equipped with heavy armor that would restrict mobility on exposed desert terrain, it was instead fitted with reactive armor. Such armor incorporated explosive charges that detonated outward on impact, reducing the internal damage sustained, increasing survival rates, and as a result allowing for improved collection of combat data. Similar to the GM Land Combat Type, the Desert GM is armed with a beam saber, railcannon and an optional beam spray gun.
History
The RGM-79F Desert GM was mostly deployed in the Middle East and Northern Africa during the One Year War.
