Technology & Combat Characteristics
The biggest headache encountered by the Zeon forces during its Earth invasion campaign was the decline in the mobility of their mobile suits under the gravity, and this was beginning to have a major negative impact on their ground operations. At the same time that the MS-07B Gouf was deployed, a plan was proposed to give MS the ability to fly in order to improve mobility. Led by Col. Isaac Wormick, the Zeon's MS-07 development team established a department in the 29th Colony Industrial Zone of Side 3 for this project. Three YMS-07A Prototype Goufs and one YMS-07B Gouf were modified at Side 3, It can also be equipped with handheld weaponry when needed.
During tests, the H-type Gouf proved capable of jumping at a level that exceeded regular Zakus and Goufs, In the end, the H-type Gouf was regarded as a failure, Additionally, experiments with H-type Gouf gave rise to the idea of high-speed movement using jet hovering, which was realized by the MS-09 Dom.
History
The MS-07H Gouf Flight Test Types were transported from Side 3 to Flatnail Airbase in Arizona, North America, and were tested by a team of test pilots led by Cpt. Billy Wong Dyke. A total of 38 flight tests were conducted over a four-week period, most of which were low-altitude takeoff and landing tests, and the high-altitude navigation tests encountered more than a dozen problems, including insufficient thrust. The mobile suit was also found to have short flight time and poor maneuverability, and was regarded as failing to achieve the goal of "flying like an aircraft." Consequently, the H-type Gouf was not adopted, and with the subsequent failure of the MS-07H-4 Gouf Flight Test Type, the plan was eventually cancelled.
After the war, the H-type Goufs were seized by the Earth Federation Forces (EFF) and produced in small numbers. They were used for a long period of time as test mobile suits, with the legs being refitted with thermonuclear jet engines, and the cockpit converted to a linear seat system. In May U.C. 0087, four H-type Goufs equipped with giant bazookas were deployed by the EFF to defend the Jaburo military headquarter during AEUG's Earth drop operation, but they were no match against AEUG mobile suits and were all destroyed.
