Technology & Combat Characteristics
The Kestrel, then known as "Gullinbursti" was originally developed as a personal unit for Rossweisse, a female Titans soldier. During a space test, however, the unit was captured by the AEUG, along with its transport ship. This was not a direct combat capture but rather an internal sabotage, as a pro-AEUG faction within the Oakland Research Institute secretly transferred the unit, wiping its development data and plans from the lab’s database.
After its capture, operational testing was conducted aboard Rosa Gigantea, an Anaheim Electronics-managed La Vie en Rose self-propelled dock ship. The Kestrel features a mono-eye type main camera positioned in the chest slit rather than the head, where only a dummy or sub-camera is installed. As a result, even if the head is destroyed, battle performance remains largely unaffected.
Additionally, after an accident caused by the second test pilot, Avey Alva, the head, shoulders, and knee armor were damaged. The repairs incorporated components inspired by the RGM-79C GM Type C "Wagtail", effectively disguising its original Titans design. The attitude control system was also recalibrated using Wagtail’s data. To further reinforce this identity shift, its color scheme was changed from the Titans' dark blue to a white and blue palette inspired by the Wagtail—an idea proposed by Lopes Akiyama, a Karaba-affiliated mechanic who had transferred to the AEUG. Initially, the unit lacked a dedicated name until after its first combat sortie, when Souichi Obino suggested "Kestrel."
The Kestrel’s backpack is equipped with a built-in laser rocket, a miniaturized version of a propulsion system originally developed for interplanetary travel. This technology, the same as that used on the Pegasus-class Albion, was acquired by the Oakland Research Institute and adapted for mobile suit use. In theory, if the issue of pilot survivability under extreme conditions could be resolved, the Kestrel would have the capability to fly as far as the asteroid belt. Unlike conventional thrusters, the laser rocket uses water as a propellant, eliminating the risk of detonation. Additionally, because the laser directly heats the propellant, there is no need for an oxidizer.
However, this system was originally designed for long-distance space travel, making it ill-suited for combat due to its fragility and reliability issues. To compensate, the Kestrel was equipped with a modular thruster replacement system, requiring its main thrusters to be swapped out after each sortie. This also led to the adoption of a Core Block System, a rare feature in mobile suits of the Gryps Conflict era, allowing the backpack to function as an escape module if needed. While four spare backpacks were stored aboard the mothership, the constant maintenance demands placed a significant burden on mechanics.
History
The MSW-004 Gundam [Kestrel] is a prototype mobile suit developed by the Oakland Research Institute. Originally designated as ORX-008 Gundam [Gullinbursti], it was designed for use by Cyber Newtypes with enhanced bodies and intended for deployment with the Titans Special Forces. However, after being captured by the anti-Earth Federation group AEUG, the suit was modified and renamed before being incorporated into their forces. In the Space Arc, the latter half of the story, it serves as the primary unit piloted by the protagonist Van Asiliano.
