Technology & Combat Characteristics
The ORX-008 Gundam [Gullinbursti] was a prototype mobile suit developed by the Oakland Research Institute for Cyber Newtype pilots and served as the predecessor to the Gundam Kestrel. Originally designed exclusively for Rossweisse, the unit was never completed under its intended purpose. Before development could be finalized, AEUG sympathizers within the laboratory—including Dr. Alvis, one of its lead developers—transferred the machine to the AEUG.
Two units were produced: Unit 1 and Unit 2. Unit 1 was later modified into the Kestrel following an accident during a test flight on the Rosa Gigantea. Meanwhile, Unit 2 remained in Granada, serving as a testbed for new mobile suit technologies. As a result, advancements such as the Armor Exterior and Maneuver Exterior components for the Kestrel were developed using data from Unit 2. The Gullinbursti's core fighter is nicknamed "Piglet".
Structurally, the Gullinbursti shares its core frame and systems with the Kestrel, though there are notable design differences. The head and exterior armor feature distinct variations, and instead of the Kestrel’s beam saber rack, the Gullinbursti originally had wing binders on its back for attitude control. However, these wing binders made the suit overly maneuverable, leading to their removal in the Kestrel’s redesign. Additionally, blade antennas on the shoulders and knees were used to enhance the Shaman Frame’s sensitivity, but these were removed from Unit 1 during its upgrade and replaced with beam emitters. Unlike the Kestrel, which has multiple built-in beam emitters, the Gullinbursti was equipped a pair of built-in beam sabers, which also functioned as a beam gun mounted in its arms.
History
Two Gullinbursti units exist and both of them fell to the hands of the AEUG after the Oakland Base is captured. Unit 1 was refurbished as the MSW-004 Gundam [Kestrel] after the Titans had already moved their forces to space, leaving behind the unit. Unit 1 was captured intact by the AEUG and continued with testing the prototype on board the Anaheim Electronics (AE) La Vie en Rose-class dock ship, Rosa Gigantia.
After fulfilling its role as a testbed following the First Neo Zeon War, Unit 2 was assigned to the Salamis Kai-class cruiser Delphi, where it was piloted by Yohn Juliana. While the Gullinbursti was not originally designed as a Gundam-type unit, its connection to Unit 1 (Kestrel)—which had been modified into a Gundam—led the Delphi’s crew to refer to it as a Gundam. Yohn, upon becoming its pilot, also adopted the Gundam moniker, as its V-shaped antenna closely resembled those of traditional Gundam-type mobile suits.
