Technology & Combat Characteristics
The Icarus Unit is an equipment option for the [[RX-121-1 Gundam TR-1 [Hazel Custom]|RX-121-1 Gundam TR-1 [Hazel Custom] ]] based on the concept of unassisted mobile suit flight under gravity. Lacking the ability to transform from mobile suit form to flight form like the [[NRX-044 Prototype Asshimar TR-3 [Kehaar]|NRX-044 Prototype Asshimar TR-3 [Kehaar] ]], this revolutionary system achieves flight through brute force, thanks to the high thrust produced by the powerful thermonuclear jet engines attached to its lower body and the thermonuclear rocket engines in its shoulders. The Icarus Unit's shoulder parts can swivel forward 90 degrees for storage inside the [[ORX-005 Gaplant TR-5 [Hrairoo]|ORX-005 Gaplant TR-5 [Hrairoo] ]], and they have option latches for attaching weapons, shields, or sub arm units. The wing-like devices connected to the shoulders function as attitude stabilizers during flight. The waist parts contain a supplemental generator similar to that used in the Hazel Custom's movable booster pod, albeit somewhat larger.
In the early stages of the aerial combat unit development project, the plan was to equip the Icarus Unit with aerodynamic wing units, achieving flight through a combination of thruster power and lift. However, in mobile suit form its aerodynamic characteristics were extremely poor, and it was determined that it would be unable to move freely in three dimensions. Thus, the unit's specifications were changed to the current concept of achieving flight through high thrust.
History
The Icarus Unit is fielded by the Titans Test Team in UC 0084. Data collected from the unit is later used for the development of the RX-160 Byarlant.
